Traveling for Cannabis

Travelers and cannabis lovers often seek a balance between comfort, pleasure, and new adventures. Today, fortunately, there are several countries in the world where marijuana is considered legal and where you can have an unforgettable experience, tasting the best weed. Of course, there is no single best strain; there are high-quality strains, but the judgment is strictly subjective. Some may prefer Amsterdam's cannabis, others that of Prague or Barcelona. Curiosity is certainly the basis for any type of trip, but what could be more intriguing for a cannabis enthusiast than trying strains from all over the world?

There are real pilgrimage sites for marijuana consumers. Traveling to these places at least once in a lifetime is truly exciting. In some countries, part of the economy is even based on marijuana tourism revenue, while in places where marijuana is still illegal, there is flexibility regarding personal use.

Below, we've prepared a list of the 10 ideal places for marijuana tourism, selected based on their cultural acceptance, laws, beauty, and social life. Have a good trip!

1. Netherlands

In first place, we couldn't help but include the Netherlands and in particular Amsterdam, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Since the 1970s, Dutch police have been ordered to ignore “coffeeshops” selling cannabis, as long as they complied with certain specific regulations. Over the years, these guidelines have changed. For example, a ban on commercial cultivation was introduced. In any case, Dutch coffeeshops are famous worldwide. Many tourists, in fact, choose to visit them to taste the most prestigious cannabis strains.

This is an important source of tourism and income for the country. Some coffeeshops may not let you in if you are not Dutch, but the percentage is very low compared to those that sell to all tourists.

2. Spain

In second place we find Spain, a wonderful country. Regarding tolerance towards cannabis, Spain has chosen a different approach from the Netherlands. The “cannabis social clubs” in Barcelona are very similar to Amsterdam's coffeeshops. However, the main difference concerns how you access these venues. While any adult with an ID can freely enter a Dutch coffeeshop, to enter Spanish cannabis clubs, you need to pay a membership fee. When you pay this fee, you receive cannabis buds in return. In reality, you are not paying for the cannabis, but making a “donation” to support the club's non-profit cultivation costs.

However, the clubs are subject to other restrictions. They are often located in isolated areas, away from public view. Sometimes they are even located in a member's apartment. The regulations governing the clubs vary from region to region. Some provinces ban their presence, so you need to make sure to visit areas of Spain where cannabis clubs are authorized by local authorities. In many clubs, even foreign visitors can become members, but in this case the laws are more restrictive. The Catalan government that administers Barcelona, for example, has passed a law requiring a two-week waiting period before club membership is approved.

In Barcelona, drugs are illegal, but usually the police turn a blind eye to personal marijuana use, even on the street, though they do not tolerate dealing. Possession, on the other hand, is legal, and if you smoke indoors you don't need to worry.

3. Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is well known for being incredibly flexible with its drug laws. The country, in fact, tolerates up to 15 grams of marijuana or 5 grams of hashish.

Prague, in particular, is a wonderful city, home to unique cubist architecture, with baroque palaces and gardens, gothic cathedrals, Romanesque chapels, and historic parks. Also not to be overlooked is the price of beer, which can be bought for less than €1 per liter.

Although marijuana remains illegal throughout the country, Prague has always been considered the “Amsterdam of the East”, thanks to its liberal laws and related policies, where regular marijuana users are ignored by authorities and tolerated by the entire Czech population.

The Czech Republic, thanks to its drug laws—among the most permissive in Europe—is one of the four European Union countries with the highest growth rate of cannabis consumers. Not surprisingly, in recent years it has become one of the most famous European capitals for good weed and hashish.

4. Jamaica

Jamaica has always been associated with marijuana, not only thanks to the Rastafarian religion, which allows its practitioners to use cannabis as a sacred substance, but also due to reggae music, which has helped create a strong link between cannabis and the country. It's impossible not to mention Bob Marley, an artist who became a global icon.

The Jamaican government has chosen to promote the cultivation of medical cannabis for research purposes and for the production of prescription drugs. Possession is considered a minor offense only up to 56.6 grams of weed, while personal use is tolerated only up to 5 grams per person. If you have a medical prescription for medical cannabis in your home country, you can request a local permit to freely consume weed without the risk of unpleasant incidents.

However, the sale of cannabis is not yet legal. Locals who are more informed may still help you find good quality weed, to be consumed discreetly, of course.

5. Canada

We must also include Canada in this list, especially the city of Vancouver. Its prime minister has committed to fully legalizing medical cannabis at the federal level. In addition to a cannabis culture that has lasted for centuries, Canada has many other tourist attractions.

The oceanic climate of the west coast has allowed this region to become one of the main centers for marijuana cultivation. Even before legalization, the city of Vancouver allowed the presence of various coffeeshops where cannabis could be freely consumed. In reality, possessing cannabis without a medical license is illegal, but the police usually turn a blind eye if it's less than 6 grams.

Vancouver boasts some of the strains with the highest THC levels in all of North America. Among the most popular strains are Orange and Purple Kush. In addition, there are numerous cannabis-friendly restaurants and cafes that allow you to smoke marijuana, even though they are not authorized to sell the products.

6. Colorado, United States

Colorado is the first state in the Union to have legalized recreational marijuana, even organizing its retail sale. In Colorado stores, in fact, you can freely purchase cannabis, although consumption on the premises is not allowed. However, in recent years, more and more spaces are being developed to host marijuana smokers. In some cities, such as Denver, real guided tours are organized to suggest the best places to consume cannabis in peace.

In Canada and the United States, there is a celebratory day for marijuana smokers, known as “420 day”, on April 20th. During these festivities, Colorado is one of the most popular destinations for marijuana smokers.

Colorado is famous for its breathtaking landscapes and offers as many as four national parks: Rocky Mountain, Mesa Verde, Great Sand Dunes, and Black Canyon. In addition, art lovers will also appreciate visits to museums such as the Denver Art Museum and the Clyfford Still Museum.

7. Australia

Australia is one of the most beloved tourist destinations and has legalized medical cannabis. Cannabis for recreational use remains illegal, and penalties vary from state to state. This policy has been firmly rejected by a city near the northern borders with Queensland. This is the city of Nimbin. Its local community attracts hippies from all over the continent. Here, since the 1970s, cannabis has been celebrated periodically with events and free marijuana consumption.

Before the laws became more repressive, locals had even opened a coffeeshop. It was an activity more similar to those in Vancouver than to Amsterdam's coffeeshops. Cannabis was not sold openly, but it could be consumed. The citizens of Nimbin are friendly and welcoming and offer many products made from hemp. The buildings are painted with bright colors and imaginative murals. There is also a Nimbin HEMP Bar and the Nimbin Hemp Embassy, where tourists can get all the useful information.

8. Denmark

In Denmark, too, there is a neighborhood within the capital Copenhagen that seems isolated from the world. It's called Christiania and is an anarchist community living in an abandoned military area.

Here, laws come into force only after a democratic vote. At the market stalls on “Pusher Street”, cannabis can be bought and sold freely. Tourists are attracted to this parallel reality and often come to this emblematic place to taste the different varieties of marijuana in complete freedom.

9. Cambodia

This location is perhaps the least known, yet its popularity is increasing day by day. Thailand and Vietnam are already very famous tourist destinations, but more and more often tourists choose to go to Cambodia as well. This country is rich in history and wonderful temples. Today, the nation takes a very relaxed attitude towards cannabis. In Cambodia, marijuana is illegal, but it seems that the police have been instructed to tolerate and ignore its sale and/or consumption. In any case, it's important to keep in mind that here the authorities are known for selective enforcement of the ban and for very harsh penalties.

In Cambodia, marijuana is often openly sold in markets and at extremely advantageous prices. In fact, the cannabis cultivation sector is very widespread here, so there is plenty of cannabis. The quality is highly variable and the best cannabis is destined for export. It is also often used in cooking to prepare various recipes. Many places sell “happy pizza“, a pizza baked with cannabis that, in addition to having a very tasty flavor, also offers a powerful psychoactive high.

10. Uruguay

We've kept Uruguay as the last destination, as it is the first and only country in the world to have completely legalized cannabis, expanding its free market nationwide.

The market, regulated by the government, offers much lower prices compared to many other countries, such as Colorado or Amsterdam, where a gram of legal cannabis usually costs between 10 and 30 dollars. In Uruguay, the price per gram is just one dollar.

Cannabis & Travel: Conclusions

This ranking obviously does not include all the ideal destinations for cannabis lovers, but it gives you an idea of where you can plan your next trip. The countries we've mentioned are enchanting places, offering unique landscapes and unforgettable experiences. All that's left is to choose!
